GREENGUARD Gold Certified for Indoor Air Quality

What Does GREENGUARD Certified Mean?

If you've purchased paint, mattresses, flooring or other products lately, you may have seen a "GREENGUARD GOLD" marking on the packaging.

This marking helps us identify interior products and materials that have low VOCs emissions, thus improving the quality of the indoor air where those products are used.

In order to bear this mark, products have to go through a set of strict certification criteria that account for sensitive individuals such as children and the elderly. Those criteria also ensure that a product is acceptable for use in environments such as schools and healthcare facilities.

Why is the Quality of our Indoor Air so Important?

Canadians spend most of their time indoors!

As Canadians, we spend most of our time indoors, not surprising given the frigid winters that we have to endure. Recent studies show that we spend as much as 90% of our time indoors... So why aren't we more concerned about the quality of the air we breathe in our homes?

Because most people believe that the air we breathe in our homes is cleaner than the air we breathe outdoors. The reality is quite the opposite.

Polluted indoor air?

Most people are not aware of this, but the air in your home can be dirty and harmful to your health. In fact, indoor air can be even more polluted than the air outdoors.

You may be surprised to find out what's polluting the air indoors. Everyday life activities contribute to polluting the air inside, such as cooking, cleaning, lighting candles, drying clothes indoors, even sleeping and breathing.

Too make things worse, everyday household products and building materials release volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) and toxins into our homes, which worsen our indoor air quality. VOCs are found in a number of items from plastic toys, to building materials - and they can produce harmful toxins in our homes for years after they've been installed.

According to the American Lung Association, poor indoor air quality can potentially cause or contribute to the development of infections, lung cancer and chronic lung diseases such as asthma.

How Can we Make our Indoor Air Cleaner?

Short from abandoning our homes and living outside, we need to do a better job controlling the quality of the air in our homes. We need to do our part by doing the following:

  • Opening the windows at least a couple of times a day to let in some fresh air.
  • Avoiding burning candles or firewood.
  • Using environmentally friendly cleaning products.
  • Using, if possible, air purifiers and hypoallergenic air filters in HVAC systems.

When it comes to VOCs, it may not be possible to remove all of these toxins from your home, but at least when it comes to home renovation projects, choose your products carefully. Not all products are made the same and some products have been specifically designed to improve the air we breathe in our homes.

When your renovation project includes a ceiling makeover, choose Ceilume's ceiling tiles and panels for a better indoor air quality!

Ceilume ceiling tiles and panels are tested for all volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) including formaldehyde, breathable particles, ozone, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide and carbon dioxide emissions.

Not only are Ceilume ceiling products decorative and affordable, but they also help ensure that the air we breathe indoors is that much better!
